Cleveland Fire Brigade.
25th November 2007

Cleveland Fire Brigade was created on 1st April 1974 when the then new County of Cleveland was created during the County boundry revisions of that year. The Brigade comprises of the former Teesside Fire Brigade, (which in itself was only a new creation, being created in 1968.) together with further parts of Durham and North Yorkshire, and Hartlepool Fire Brigade. Cleveland is well known for the distinctive white fronts on their appliances, which first appeared on a pair of AEC Mercury's (AXG2 & 29K) in 1971. This livery variant continues on todays appliances.
This collection taken by myself over the last twenty years or so, will feature appliances and other vehicles of this very interesting Brigade.

After withdrawl in 2003, it is currently a works appliance for a company in Doncaster.

This is Saltburn's former Pump Escape 'THN948S' and it is seen shortly after it's initial preservation without it's ladder. I am extremely pleased to say that it is now reunited with it's wheeled Escape, and is a credit to it's owner. This machine was new in 1978, and was the last new Wheeled Escape in the North East. it replaced KVN344, a former North Yorkshire Dennis F12 PE at Saltburn. It suffered a rollover accident in 1985, and was rebuilt and replaced into service, it was withdrawn in Feb 95, and sold to English and Mustard in Birtley Co Durham, before being acquired for preservation in July 2000.

H49KVN in it's original role as the first and only production example of the Clevelander ET project. The rear half of the body extended outwards to allow greater stowage of equipment. the project was deemed a failiure, and in 1995, was rebuilt as an ET/CU. (see elsewhere on this page) this picture is scanned from one of my prints, and is not very good. it will be replaced when I find the negative!

842JUP was 1961 Bedford TJ5 with HCB Angus bodywork, new to Durham Fire Brigade. It came to Teesside Fire Brigade in the 1968 amalagmation, and lasted till around 1972, operating from Stockton Fire Station (South Road Norton). It was acquired for preservation in the middle 80's, and did the NE Rally circuits for several years, but was unfortunately involved in an RTA on the A19 with a Wagon, after it had been to the Tyne Tees Rally around 1996. It was written off, however, I've since heard that it's remains still exist. Notice the white bumper bar, not all the appliances, particularly those from the constituant Brigades which made up Teesside, recieved the white fronts, some such as this one only acquired small area's of white as seen here.

Rear view of the experimental 'Clevelander' project developed by the Brigade and Teesside university, its main feature was the extending bodywork as seen here on display at Teesside Airport Rally in 1987. It was built on a former ET which had been new in 1972 (ADC999K). The project resulted in one vehicle being built (H49KVN/see elsewhere on this page), but this was not the success that it was hoped for. The resulting vehicle is now a CU.

In 1984, Hartlepool's wonderful AEC Mercury TL was offered for sale at the Teesside Airport Fire Engine Rally (as it was then). It was purchased by Cork Fire Brigade in Ireland (753MZK) It damaged it's ladders on the first occasion that it was used, which caused it to be taken out of service. I don't know where it is now though.
